Put your Company Culture Front and Center in the Interview
Put your Company Culture Front and Center in the bewerbungsgesprchPut your Company Culture Front and Center in the InterviewPut your Company Culture Front and Center in the Interview MatusonYour company brand may not be as strong as Google, but that doesnt mean you cant compete with the big guys for talent.Put your company culture and brand front and center when you conduct an interview with top talent and youll have a better chance of hiring them.Weave your Brand into the InterviewAs I talk about in thisemployment brand webinar, your company brand is your companys personality. Its what differentiates you from everyone else. To best leverage it, you must recognize what makes your organization unique the key is to then incorporate it into your hiring process and weave it into interview questions. For example, suppose you own a small catering company. Food is ingrained in the culture of this type of geschftsleben most likely you are seeking to hire people who are creative and passionat e about food.Instead of posing stale interviewing questions such as How would you describe your former boss, engage the candidate with interview questions that allow your company brand to shine.Ask candidates interview questions such as Think of a dish that best describes your most recent boss. Framing your question this way will allow you to ascertain how creative the candidate can be. Youll quickly get a sense of how this person will fit into your organizational culture. At the same time, candidates will realize your company is anything but ordinary.Interviewing for ConsistencyConsistency is also an important job skill for businesses that heavily rely on accuracy. To test for this in the interview, ask candidates how they would respond to specific work scenarios that relate to your business and pay close attention to their response. For example, if you andrang an auto shop, ask the applicant to walk you through the steps he would take when changing car brakes. Those that rush throu gh the process and leave out important details are clearly not the right people for your business. Applicants that provide the correct steps and take pride in their answers are the ones that should be given further consideration. To determine how well candidates takes direction, ask applicants to describe a time when they thought they were right, yet were required to follow company protocol even though they didnt agree with it. How did they handle this situation? If your company culture is one that encourages people to speak up, then share this with candidates. If not, then explain why closely following directions is vital in your business.Put Company Perks Up FrontIn todays competitive hiring environment, candidates are expecting to hear about company perks that come with the job. Your small business may not have room for a large foosball table, but that doesnt mean your team doesnt like to have fun.Make a list of the many benefits of working for your small company, such as free tick ets to local sporting events include intangible items such as working side by side with the boss and having autonomy to do your job. When conducting an interview, be sure to highlight those items on your list.During the job interview, ask candidates what type of perks matter most to them. Then pull from your list and talk about those programs that would be most appealing to the candidate.Perhaps the candidate is interested in fitness. Respond by discussing your philosophy on wellness at work and how that ties into your perks. If socializing is tops on this candidates list, then discuss group activities that are parte of the social scene at work.Highlight your Workplace FlexibilityWorking 9-5 used to be appealing to the masses not so much anymore. How work gets done and how its scheduled can distinguish your companys culture from competitors. If your small business culture offers workplace flexibility, then highlight this when interviewing candidates. You can do so by asking candidate s when they are most productive. This will allow you to promote your flexible work hours. Youll also be able to determine if their internal clock matches your companys time clock. For instance, I know one small business owner who hires workers to pull long shifts during his busy season. When conducting interviews, he always mentions the hours that everyone is required to work. He also weaves in stories regarding his employees who are able to pursue their passion during off-peak times. One such employee goes on tour with his band during the slow months and returns to resume his duties during this business owners peak business cycle. This savvy business owner is able to recruit large company employees because hes using his companys size and small business culture as an advantage.Tout a Great WorkplaceThe office environment certainly matters when it comes to attracting candidates. This is usually where large businesses have the advantage given their large budget. This is not usually the case for small business owners. Dont be discouraged, however. Astute candidates will recognize that beauty is only skin deep.Work with what youve got. One small business owner gave his team a small budget to design their common workspace. The results were a direct reflection of the company brand. The business owner conducts job interviews in this space he always mentions to candidates that this type of collaboration is part of the companys culture. This is a smart business move. If a candidate is drawn to an environment that is keen on collaboration, theyll be attracted to this business. If not, then this business owner has saved himself from all the ramifications that occur when you hire someone who is not the right fit for your business.Leveraging the many benefits of being a small business employer will enable you to capture the hearts and minds of candidates in a job market where big isnt necessarily better.Heres to your hiring successAuthor BioRoberta Chinsky Matuson, president of Matuson Consulting is author of the best-selling books Talent Magnetism How to Build a Workplace That Attracts and Keep the Best and Suddenly in Charge. One Surefire Way to Stand Out in Your Job Search
One Surefire Way to Stand Out in Your Job Search One Surefire Way to Stand Out in Your Job Search Imagine if employers saw you as not just another job applicant, but as an expert in your field. Think how it would feel to point recruiters to the speech you gave at a prestigious conference or your Masters thesis on your industry. If youre not a well-know entrepreneur or senior executive, you might think thats just a pipe dream. But its not No matter what you do for a living, the Internet makes it possible for you to establish yourself as an expert. There are lots of ways you can do this, and many of them take time. For example, you could start a blog and build up an audience. You could tweet about your profession and attract attention that way. You could build up a strong online presence by writing articles for trade publications. All of these are excellent strategies for building awareness. But what if you dont have the time or inclination to write regularly?Thats where my solution come s in. Meet Squidoo.Squidoo is a free web publishing site that allows anyone to sign up and create web pages (called lenses). Here are a couple of lenses so you can binnensee what Im talking aboutThe Best and Most Effective Way to Promote Your Business50 Ways to use Twitter These pages are quick and easy to create the interface is very intuitive and they offer lots of help. Best of all, the service is completely free. in fact, if you attract a lot of traffic to your page, you can actually earn money, but thats another story. For now, I want to focus on how Squidoo can help you further your career goals. How Can You Use Squidoo to Stand Out?Heres all you need to do.Create a Squidoo page that demonstrates your professional knowledgeWe all carry around enormous stores of knowledge about what we do for a living knowledge that cant be communicated in a two-page resume or short cover letter. Squidoo allows you to share that knowledge with other people while also positioning yourself as an authority.A sales person could create a page called How to Grow Revenues Through Solution SellingAn internet marketer could create a page called The Top 10 Web Analytics Tools and How to Use Them.An executive assistant could write An Executive Assistants Guide to Organization.A benefits administrator could write Understanding Your Health care Plan A Quick Guide.A plumber could write several pages on simple household problems such as How to Unblock a Sink. Include your page (or pages) in all job search correspondenceAdd a link to your page into your resume. Either at the end of your resume profile, or at the end of the actual resume, say something like Learn more about my approach to sales in my article How to Grow Revenues Through Solution Selling and include a link to your page.Include the same statement in cover letters or emails to potential employers/recruiters. Add a link in your email signature. Link to the page on your LinkedIn page or Google profile. Now Youre an ExpertJust like that, you have positioned yourself as a knowledgeable candidate. Marketers know that establishing a sense of authority is one of the keys to selling a product or service. The same applies to marketing yourself to potential employers. Show them that you know your stuff and they will instantly think more highly of you.You have also shown that you are serious about your work. Employers are looking for dedicated, hard-working employees who care about what they do. Its hard to tell that from a resume. But someone who took the time to write an article about his profession? Thats someone I want to meet.Photo by suvodeb

The 5 most stressful moments you might face in your career
The 5 most stressful moments you might face in your careerThe 5 most stressful moments you might face in your careerFrom a calendar thats overflowing with unnecessary meetings to deadlines that continue to pile, its difficult to manage all responsibilities and keep a level head. Thats likely why its no surprise that according to a recent survey, 58% of people felt stressed more than half the time they were at work. But aparte from the day-to-day triggers, every professional also experiences periods where they feel like they cant catch a break. These high-stakes, high-anxiety times are usually due to an incompatible office environment or pressures in your personal and social life that bleed into your work. Whatever the reason, navigating ansicht seasons with a calm attitude and a heightened dedication to problem-solving will help you push forward. Here, career experts detail the most stressful moments you might encounter throughout your trajectoryHaving a bad bossEspecially if this isnt your first rodeo, you know how much of a difference your manager makes in your performance, your success and your overall level of content. As career and branding expert Wendi Weiner, Esq. explains, when your boss is overbearing, dismissive, passive-aggressive or flat out rude, it transforms an otherwise healthy environment into one thats ripe with tension. When this happens, you not only dread your morning commute but youre usually sharp brilliance tends to wane. You begin to doubt yourself, your skills, and even the potential for happiness at the office, she explains. You might want to put in your pink slip but Weiner encourages a pause We spend a great deal of time at work - but dont jump ship based on emotions of how you feel about your boss, your coworkers, or even the companys culture, she advises. I recommend making a list that identifies the challenges you are facing and solutions to address those challenges.Getting a bad reviewYou may or may not be part of the gold star ge neration, but everyone would prefer to receive a rave review, right? After all, criticism - constructive or not - can be difficult to stomach, especially if you werent expecting negative remarks from your boss or your peers. Career coach and author Heather Monahan saysthat while you might be tempted to argue or get upset, in this situation, its better to let your head take the lead over your heart.Dont spend your time apologizing. Instead shift to actionable steps you can take to improve is where you will want to focus, she explains. Ask great questions and get expectations in writing to empower you to improve your review. Be bold and ask for a 30-day updated review to ensure you are on the right track and making the necessary adjustment.leid making enough moneyDo you remember your fresh-out-of-college salary? Begrudgingly, yes - right? While these days youre not sure how you managed to get by (or eat as much cheap pasta as you did), even when youre further your career, the dolla r signs dont always align. You might feel this more after having a baby, taking on an investment property, sending said-baby to college or becoming the primary caretaker of an aging parent.Whatever the reason, you could find yourself struggling to budget and flourish. Weiner says when youre feeling less than lucrative, put yourself in action mode. By creating a plan with your current company to rise up the tax brackets or creating an additional source of income, you place yourself in better financial standing. Consider other avenues for making money- perhaps you need to take on a side hustle to improve your cash flow or re-work your expenses. Look beyond the current salary you are being given, but also stay updated on salary ranges for your current career path to remain competitive, she advises.Starting a familyWhile arguably, carrying a child, giving birth and readjusting from pregnancy hormones is far more of a strain on a woman than a man, starting a family is stressful for every one. Not only are both partners faced with the sudden, dramatic transformation in their social life, relationship and sleep rhythms, but what used to feel important at the office might feel trivial in comparison now that theyre a parent.Monahan says lack of rest and an abundance of emotions may make you doubt yourself and your talents, as you become hyper-focused on taking care of your newborn. This is when professionals must set boundaries to keep stress levels - and guilt - at a minimum. In other words? Practice for those terrible twos by exercising the word no. You need to clearly and effectively communicate how the baby has changed your schedule and needs, so you can have a smooth of a transition as possible, she says.Being unemployedMaybe your company downsized or eliminated your position. Perhaps you took a leap of faith on an entrepreneurial endeavor that left you demystified. Or you were laid off for coming up shy on your goals. Whatever the reason, finding yourself unempl oyed can be a scary and anxiety-inducing experience. While everyone needs a weekend to wallow and nurse their pride, once Monday morning rolls around, Weiner says its time to wipe your brow and begin networking.Remember, its not about what you know, but who you know. Look to local professional networking events through your city calendar, professional organizations, and even ones that are industry-specific. Ramp up your LinkedIn profile and start building a network of new connections and dont be afraid to ask for in-person meetings, she advises. The key is to remain diligent, confident and proactive, so you dont spend too much time blowing through your savings. The more you doubt yourself, the more youll struggle to rebuild - and transform - your life. As Weiner calls it, let this be a time when your career is awakened - and youre ready to tackle whatever else comes next.

3 big things I learned from a new stress management course on LinkedIn
3 big things I learned from a new stress management course on LinkedIn3 big things I learned from a new stress management course on LinkedInIf theres one thing Ive learned as a member of the working world, its that stress is inevitable. But a new, online stress management course taught by an integrative neuroscientist and executive director of The American Institute of Stress on LinkedIn Learning taught me that it isnt always a bad thing. In fact, there are ways to use it to your advantage. As I settled into my chair, I buckled up and listened to instructor Dr. Heidi Hanna, Ph.D. (who is also the CEO and founder of coaching and consulting company SYNERGY)give me a new perspective on stress. Here are just a few things I took away from the experience. What stress really is- and what its notStress is simply the gap between demand and capacity.Or maybe mora specifically, its what happens in that gapbetween demand and capacity, Hanna says in the course. She also talks about how we shouldnt think of it as positive or negative, but that it just impacts us in different ways, depending on a variety of factors.Hanna talks about how stress can become addictive, and that some of her clients claim that they rely on their stress to keep going, and freak out when they believe shes going to eliminate it.But she urges course-takers to think about this idea, saying that, stress isnt bad, right? Stress is just information and energy we can use to make adjustments. Stress becomes a problem when we feel helpless to do anything about it, when weve got too much of it at once, or when it goes on for too long.Managing stress and using it to your advantageHanna talks about how stress helps you keep your eye on the ball in terms of your priorities. She says that if we think we can bring about change, we can use the energy of stress as a means to move forward. She went on to describe how to use stress to get ahead. Her formula is to assess (figure out more about the situation), then to apprec iate (to take comfort in the idea that your stress is trying to benefit you, and you care about what youre stressed about, or to be grateful for something else in your life). The third step is to adjust, or take one small action step to make progress, and to briefly pause to spend time recharging your own battery.Hanna also taught course participants a brain recharge process where you repeatedly breathe in for 5 beats, then out for that long, thinking about your breath, to feel more calm. The next step is to feel thankful for something or someone. Lastly, you focus, or to bring your attention to what matters most to you at that time. How to prevent stress from getting the best of you at workAs managers and leaders, one of the best ways we can help other people navigate stress more effectively is to help them to define it more clearly and to unpack the contributing factors that cause them to feel like they dont have the resources they need to cope, Hanna says in the course. She recomme nds doing an energy audit by taking note of different factors like time, creativity, purpose, money, fun and social support for example, among others, in an effort to get clear on how you feel in these realms by assigning each one a number from 0 (none) to 10 (at capacity). These also arent fixed areas.Participants can then come up with one small way to shore up specific areas (this information can be shared within groups). This exercise can be done continuously. In the same workplace vein, Hanna later talks how to improve where we work emphasizing certain things that influence how we feel (such as noise, colors and movement and more). These sensory cues can all shift our brain to feel either more calm and confident or getting triggered to be on high alert, Hanna continues. She later mentions how to cut down on distractions in open offices, and how to build in positive capacity cues to help balance the load of stress and stimulation, such as being a proponent of walking or standing mee tings, having active spaces, areas where people can get work done in without much noise (like an office with a door and a window) and more.

Dealing with the First Day - Spark Hire
Dealing with the First Day - Spark HireAn employees first day on the job can be one of the most taxing days during their tenure at a company. For the new employee, the expectations are high and there are numerous uncontrollable variables to consider. For the employer, the goal should be to help the newest addition to the team get comfortable while still having a productive day. In some instances, instead of keeping busy, some new hires endure too much free time in their schedule with nothing to fill it with since they havent been trained. Not only does this make for an awkward first day for an employee, it wastes valuable time that an employer could spend acclimating the new hire. Instead of simply leaving a new employee to fend for themselves, consider a few ways to fill their dayPrep your team and assign a buddy. Perhaps the buddy system is only appropriate now in the community swimming pool. How useful can it really be? If anything, it gives the new employee a starting point. Howe ver, it is important to be clear with both the individual who you are asking to take on this role as well as the new employee what the expectations are of this buddy relationship. This person is not meant to be an encyclopedia, babysitter, or even a mentor unless the two decide on that relationship on their own terms. This person is simply someone to use as a sounding board to answer basic questions about the company such as where is the supply closet? Who do I ask about problem X? How do I resolve a common computer issue?Set up meetings with other managers and others on the team to understand their jobs and the company as a whole. Effective employees have a solid grasp on the entire scope of the company. They are aware of how their job interacts with others, what deliverables they owe individuals in other departments, and how to self-seek needed information. Their first day may be a good time to have them meet with other managers in order to learn about the processes of other depar tments and how this employee might interact with those departments. This can be useful for filling in 15 minute or half-hour time slots when there may be downtime for the new employee.Have a task list. Even if this includes items such as creating a voicemaille message, setting up the email inbox, thats okay. But hand your new employee a task list while giving the expectation that creating a daily task list will now be their responsibility.Have a wind-down session at the end of the day thirty minutes before the end of the day, sit down with your new employee and ask them about their observations, questions, concerns, apprehensions, etc. Hopefully this can be a space where the employee gains clarity about their new role. Finally, set clear expectations with the new hire. Admit up front that the first day will likely not be a stroll through the woods, but assure them that as life at the company comes into focus, things will get better.Do you keep your new hires busy on their first day o r do you give them some free time? Why? Offer your explanation in the comments below.SOURCE First Day on the Job BluesIMAGECourtesy of Flickr bywoodleywonderworks
